JEE Main 75% Criteria: Bombay HC asks Govt to submit data on statewise top 20 percentile

The Bombay High Court while hearing the JEE Main 75 percent criteria has asked the government to submit some documents pertaining to 75% criteria since when it is applicable and top 20 percentile how it's going to help if different states have different top 20 percentile.

The Bombay High Court will hear the matter next week once government shares the documents.
Earlier, the matter was heard on March 1, 2023, and the High Court set the next date of hearing to April 6, 2023. JEE Main aspirants were pleading for 75 percent and top 20 percentile criteria to be removed or lowered to 50 percent in this year's entrance exam.
The students in their PIL have stated that the marks scored by them is not a true reflection of their actual ability therefore those students with fewer marks than the eligibility criteria (75%) for this year’s examinations can score very high marks in the upcoming JEE Main 2023, and if a fair chance is denied to them that will affect the future (of) lakhs of bright (students).
For admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) reinstated their eligibility criteria of 75 percent in Class 12 board exams in the JEE Mains 2023 brochure. As per the NTA brochure, in addition to the candidate's All India Rank (AIR), aspirants are required to achieve a grade point average of 75 percent or higher in class 12 in order to be considered for admission. Thereby restoring the previous criteria where a student should either have scored 75 per cent or above in the Class 12 board exam or have appeared among the top 20 percentile candidates of the respective board exam result to get admission in IITs, NITs and CFTIs.
Following this, in December advocate Anubha Sahai filed a petition in the Bombay High Court against NTA’s changed criteria. While hearing the petition, Chief Justice SV Gangpurwala and Justice Sandeep V Marne stated that the eligibility criterion issue will once again be heard in February, which was later postponed to April 6.
JEE Main 2023 aspirants started protesting against the revised guideline on social media platforms as according to them, the top 20 percentile eligibility criteria vary from board to board and are not uniform.
They argued that many students who gave boards in 2020 and 2021 could not perform well due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect. They did perform decently in JEE Mains and after not getting their preferred government college in counselling decided to take a drop and now they cannot get admission in any IIT or NIT due to the 75 percent criteria.
