The JNU students' union demanded prompt organisation of the election for the current academic session which had started on August 16, 2023.

JNUSU stages sit-in at Dean's Office to demand elections soon

The JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) staged a sit-in in the Dean's office to protest against the ABVP and DoS draft stating that the JNUSU elections 2023-24 shall only be held after Ph.D. admissions are complete.

"This is completely unacceptable, as this effectively means the indefinite and arbitrary postponement of elections. Participants of the sit-in have managed to pressurise the DoS into keeping his patently undemocratic circular in abeyance for now," said JNUSU statement.

After giving a 48-hour ultimatum to DoS to initiate the JNUSU elections 2023-24 on his office's part, the all-organization delegation went to the DoS Office to seek answers today. Instead of answering the questions raised by the all-organization delegation, the DoS had a meeting with ABVP leaders in the Office of Chairperson of CIL, SLL&CS just before coming to DoS Office. The all-organization delegation had been waiting for him at his office since 11 am for a dialogue on the issues related to the JNUSU elections that had been submitted to him on September 11, 2023, added the students' union statement.

Denying JNUSU's allegations, ABVP claimed it was also protesting against the dean. "We want the JNUSU election to be held within four weeks. We are also demanding hostel reforms such as resolving water crisis, allotment of hostels and a better hygiene facility," said the JNU unit secretary Vikas Patel, as reported by TOI.
