Karnataka to upgrade VTU, UVCE on par with IITs
The 120-acre campus of Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) in Belagavi will be the first to be upgraded as per the plan. Vice-Chancellor Karisiddappa asked to prepare an action plan within a month.
The Karnataka government is planning to upgrade the state-run Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) on a par with Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), said Higher Education Minister CN Ashwathnarayan.
The minister said the 120-acre main campus of VTU in Belagavi would be the first to be upgraded as per the plan. “The government has asked VTU Vice-Chancellor Karisiddappa to prepare an action plan in this regard within a month,” he said. He further said the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE) will be developed in line with IIT Bombay. “A 10-year plan has been prepared to ensure this transformation,” he said in Belagavi and added that UVCE is the only state-run engineering college which is not under the aegis of VTU.
‘World-class technical education to be given in 17 govt colleges in Karnataka’
The government will also give priority to setting up compact universities in each district instead of setting up large universities, he said. “It has also been decided to provide world-class quality education in 17 government engineering colleges of Karnataka. They will be developed as the most favoured institutions by granting more autonomy and constituting governing bodies for each of them,” he said.
“This would get students aspiring to get engineering education attracted to these colleges. The government is also favourable in granting more autonomy and to establish governing boards to look after their management,” Ashwathnarayan added.
