Common Entrance Test For Admission
Higher Education Minister Dr. M.C. Sudhakar said, “Some (private universities) have decided to consider JEE score while others expressed interest in KCET and a few in COMEDK. It is their choice.” The department, however, recommended that the private universities consider conducting a unified entrance test for all institutions. The minister also noted that, in the future, the government may explore the possibility of introducing a common entrance test for admissions to general degree programs at private universities.
High Fee Charged by Private Universities
The issue of high fees charged by private universities was also addressed during the meeting. The universities were instructed to establish a fee fixation committee, led by a retired judge, to regulate and set appropriate fee structures. “It is there in the law of every private university and we have directed them that they must fix the fees only through the committees,” Higher Education Minister Dr M C Sudhakar said.
The fees for 40% of the seats in professional courses at private universities, filled through KCET, will continue to be set by the government annually. In a move towards greater uniformity among private universities, the government is also considering introducing a common law that would bring all private universities under a single framework. At present, each university operates under its own individual Act.
