National Institute of Technology (NIT) Srinagar will have five per cent of all reserved seats in undergraduate courses for students of Ladakh Union Territory, an official's statement released by the registrar of the university said. This decision was moved to be passed by the Human Resource and Development ministry of India, in an effort to uplift the natives from Ladakh in Srinagar.

The Ladakh students would be accorded quota from within all reserved seats of the NIT-Srinagar from academic sessions 2020-21, it added.

The new rule will be applicable for only the undergraduate programmes offered at the NIT Srinagar.

As per the Registrar, the University of Ladakh, the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development has initiated a move to reserve five per cent seats in all undergraduate programmes of the NIT, Srinagar for eligible students of the UT of Ladakh within the overall quota seats of Jammu & Kashmir from the academic year 2020-21, the statement said.

The Centre had revoked the special status of Jammu and Kashmir under Article 370 of the Constitution and bifurcated it into two UTs of J&K and Ladakh last year. Under article 370, special status was given to the state, which had its separate constitution and autonomy.

Earlier, IIT-Delhi had proposed to drop one round of counselling this year and had forwarded the proposal to the Joint Implementation Committee for approval. The joint panel comprises the JEE Chairman of all IITs. IIT-Delhi is the organising institute for JEE (Advanced) 2020.

All Centrally Funded Technical Institutes (CFTIs) earlier use to admit students after conducting seven rounds of joint counselling.

If accepted by all IITs, this proposal will be shared with the Central Seat Allocation Board, which coordinates admission for the NITs, IIITs and Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST).
