NIT Rourkela was established as Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela in 1961. It was upgraded to an NIT in 2002 with more than 20 departments of BTech, MTech and research students of about 10,000.

The alumni of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela, have demanded to name the institute after former Chief Minister of Odisha, Biju Patnaik. Bharat Bhusan Mohanty, former executive director, Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) and founder president of NIT, Rourkela Alumni Association (NITRAA), said it was Bijubabu who was instrumental in the establishment of the Regional Engineering College (REC) Rourkela with 250 BTech students in five streams.

He said later the college was upgraded to an NIT in 2002 with more than 20 departments of BTech, MTech and research students of about 10,000. Now, among 31 NITs of the country, NIT Rourkela has a special identity.  It is ranked between 801-1,000 in the World University, between 271-280 in QS World University – ASIA Ranking, 24 in NIRF Research, 15 in NIRF Engineering and 39 in NIRF overall.

Besides, Higher Education World University Ranking 2023 has placed NIT Rourkela at 1,000-1,200, he said. 
Among others, former president of NITRAA, Rotary Governor FC Mohanty and former president, RSP Executive Association Bimal Bisi were present. We woul soon make an appeal to the Prime Minister, Chief Minister and Union Education Minister regarding the same, said Bisi.  

CSAB Special Round 2 Seat Allotment result on Nov 3 

Admission to NIT Rourkela BArch and BTech courses is based on Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main scores followed by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) Counselling 2022 . Additionally, Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) Special Rounds of counselling are conducted by Central Seat Allocation Board for NIT+ system seats that remain unfilled in JoSAA. Further, CSAB Special Round 2 Seat Allotment results are expected to release on November 3.
