The National Institute of Technology Calicut (NIT Calicut) organised a comprehensive orientation program to welcome over 2,300 new scholars for the 2024-2025 academic year. The event saw the participation of more than 1,300 undergraduate students, over 800 postgraduate students, and 200 PhD scholars, along with their parents.
The UG orientation program was inaugurated by Snehil Kumar Singh, District Collector of Kozhikode and a distinguished alumnus of IIT Roorkee’s 2014 batch. In his address, the District Collector emphasised the importance of holistic development, urging students to balance academic achievements with extracurricular pursuits.
He said, “Scoring grades is not the only measure of success. Exams do not define your worth. What matters is how you utilize your knowledge and skills.” Shri. Snehil Kumar Singh also called on students to be "carbon conscious" and to channel their expertise toward addressing global challenges, especially considering the limited resources available. He stressed the need for innovation across all sectors, stating, "India is looking to you for solutions."
Prof. Prasad Krishna, Director of NIT Calicut, echoed the importance of personal growth, advising new UG students to focus on self-improvement rather than competing with others. "The competition should be with oneself to strive for continuous betterment," he added.
The PG orientation program was inaugurated by Prof. J. N. Moorthy, Director of IISER, who highlighted the critical role of the intersection between science, technology, and society. He praised the growth of India’s higher education sector, noting the expansion from 21 universities in 1947 to 1,265 today, alongside over 50,000 colleges nationwide.
This comprehensive orientation marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the new students, equipping them with the necessary insights and inspiration to navigate their time at NIT Calicut effectively.
