Earlier, the institute introduced an internship programme for Goan students enrolled in engineering programmes in the state colleges.
Teach One Each One
As the new NIT Goa campus nears completion at Cuncolim, plans are to launch this initiative on the inauguration day, date for which is expected to be finalised soon.
The scheme will be known as Teach One Each One, wherein final year B Tech students at NIT Goa will take one student from a government high school under his or her wings.
Commenting on the institute’s decision, NIT Goa director Gopal Mugeraya said that he wants the institute to contribute in mentoring Goan youth in technical and interpersonal skills. Unlike an industry which can only create jobs, an institute like NIT Goa will prepare students for jobs, he said. “The idea is to mentor these students and motivate them to pursue higher education. We, at NIT Goa, strongly believe that just giving jobs to youth cannot be the only aim whenever an institute of higher education comes up in the state. Rather, the institute should work towards helping local youth hone their technical and interpersonal skills to address larger challenges,” he added.
“I had the privilege of visiting almost all government high schools across Goa and was happy to see that the state government has created excellent infrastructure even in remote villages. Unfortunately, student enrolment in these schools is very poor and it is high time we work to bring the students from government schools into the mainstream. We should inspire them to dream big,” Mugeraya said.
