JEE Advanced 2025 Attempt Limit case

No Third Attempt for JEE Advanced, Supreme Court Makes Final Ruling

The Supreme Court today declined to intervene in the Joint Admission Board (JAB)'s decision to reduce the number of attempts for the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) from three to two. At the same time, the Court provided relief to students who had dropped out of their courses between November 5, 2024, and November 18, 2024, by permitting them to participate in the exam this year.

The order was passed in response to a writ petition filed by the 22 aspirants challenging JAB's decision to limit attempts for JEE Advanced to two. On November 5, 2024, the Joint Admission Board (JAB) had initially announced that three attempts would be allowed. However, within two weeks, on November 18, 2024, the JAB reversed its decision, stating that only two attempts would be permitted.

Final Judgement - Students Dropped Out Between November 5 to 18, 2024 can Register for JEE Advanced 2025

In light of this, a bench consisting of Justice BR Gavai and Justice Augustine George Masih ruled that - the Joint Admission Board (JAB) made a clear promise in a press release on November 5, 2024, stating that students who had taken the Class 12 exam in 2023, 2024, or 2025 would be eligible to appear for JEE (Advanced). Some students, believing this promise, decided to drop out of their courses to focus on preparing for the exam. However, when the JAB changed its decision on November 18, 2024, and reduced the number of attempts, these students were left in a difficult situation. The Court stated that it would not go into whether the JAB's decision was right or wrong, but since these students acted based on the original promise, they should not be punished for doing so. Therefore, students who dropped out between November 5 and November 18, 2024, would still be allowed to register for the JEE (Advanced).

The Court then ended the case with this decision.
