Free coaching classes for higher education entrance exams in India will soon be a reality. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is all set to convert its 2697 test practice centres into teaching centres from 2019 for JEE Main, NEET and UGC NET aspirants. These test practice centres will start functioning from September 8, 2018.

In July 2018, it was announced that NTA will be setting up as many as 3000 practice centres for JEE Main 2019 and NEET UG 2019 aspirants. The aim of these centres would be to help candidates practice and take online mock tests free of cost from August 2018.

One of the ministry officials was quoted as saying, "The plan is to take these centres beyond just practice tests and turn them into teaching centres. They will not charge any fees and so will be especially helpful for talented students from sections where aspirations are high but private coaching is impossible due to financial constraints. Coaching to benefit rural, semi-urban candidates", to a national daily.

"For the time being, the practice centres will allow candidates to take mock tests for JEE Main only. As NEET-UG is not a computer-based test currently, there will be no mock test at the centres for the time being", he further shared.

Here is how NTA’s practice test centres will function as coaching institutes:

1. To begin with, the agency will allow candidates to take mock tests for JEE Main 2019 January exam.

2. Once the mock test results are out, NTA mentors along with students will analyse the results.

3. Now, soon after the teaching session of the test practice centres begin, the teachers at the institutes will help students with their problems.

Slot booking for test practice centres and registrations for the JEE Main 2019 Jan exam and UGC NET will begin through the mobile app or NTA’s official website from September 1. Registrations will continue till September 30. Only those students who have registered for practice sessions will be able to sit for the tests. NTA is expected to launch the mobile application and websites for registration on the above mentioned dates. The app will help candidates identify the centre closest to their location.
