Shiksha Exclusive: NIRF 2024 Rankings to Be Out in June, Ministry holds meeting with IITs, IIMs on QS Rankings
Led by key officials from the Ministry of Education, including Higher Education Secretary Sanjay Murthy, a meeting was held in New Delhi which included Directors of IITs, IIMs, Vice Chancellors of leading universities, and representatives from the QS Ranking body.
In a strategic move to bolster India's standing on the global academic stage, the Ministry of Education convened a high-level meeting with top-tier educational institutions following the recent QS World University Ranking by Subject announcement.
Led by key officials, including Higher Education Secretary Sanjay Murthy, the gathering included Directors of IITs, IIMs, Vice Chancellors of leading universities, and representatives from the QS Ranking body.
Amidst deliberations on refining strategies for international recognition, anticipation mounts for the forthcoming National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 Rankings slated for an early June reveal, as disclosed exclusively to Shiksha.com by a Vice-Chancellor.
The VC of one of the universities which attended the meeting speaking exclusively with Shiksha.com informed that the NIRF 2024 Rankings will be announced in early June this year.
During the closed-door session held in the national capital, New Delhi, attendees delved into the intricacies of the QS ranking methodology, aiming to decipher key parameters and categories crucial for elevating Indian institutions' positions.
The Head of one of the institutions, who attended the meeting on condition of anonymity said that the meeting was to further improve the ranking of Indian institutions in the QS World Ranking. He said: “The government of India is promoting international ranking and wants more and more Indian institutions to join the ranking as foreign students rely on these ranking for admission to international universities.”
He said that the Union Government intends to promote Indian universities through these rankings thereby attracting international students to Indian campuses. There has been a significant increase in the number of Indian universities participating in international rankings and there is also a positive change as the ranking of Indian institutions is also improving year on year.
QS World University Ranking by Subject 2024
The recently unveiled QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 heralded commendable achievements for Indian institutions. Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) secured the 20th position globally for development studies courses. Additionally, the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad), clinched the 22nd spot for business and management studies, closely followed by IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta.
Further, prominent Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) solidified their positions on the global stage, with IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay securing top ranks in various engineering disciplines. IIT Madras emerged as a frontrunner in petroleum engineering, further solidifying India's presence in specialized fields.
The comprehensive QS rankings underscore India's growing prominence across diverse academic disciplines, with a notable presence in engineering and technology, life sciences and medicine, arts and humanities, natural sciences, and social sciences and management. Indian institutions continue to make significant strides, exemplifying the nation's commitment to academic excellence and global recognition.
NIRF 2024 Rankings Awaited
The academic fraternity awaits the unveiling of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 Rankings, scheduled for an early June release. Anxious anticipation permeates through educational corridors as institutions brace themselves for the unveiling of their respective rankings, poised to showcase their prowess and contributions to the Indian academic landscape.
NIRF evaluates institutions based on several parameters across various categories, including Teaching, Learning, and Resources; Research and Professional Practice; Graduation Outcomes; Outreach and Inclusivity; and Perception.
