Thapar Institute Proposes Launch of First Student Satellite 'Thaparsat' to ISRO

The Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology (TIET) announced on that it will soon submit a proposal to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for the launch of its inaugural student satellite, 'Thaparsat.' This satellite program, known as the Thapar Satellite Programme, aims to monitor environmental issues and real-time pollution levels in Punjab and northern India, according to an official statement.

Initiated four years ago, the Thapar Satellite Programme represents a significant stride in offering experiential education to students, focusing on engineering and technological development in satellite construction and space missions.

Thaparsat - TIET's Satellite Program

TIET's satellite program marks a significant milestone in advancing academic and research initiatives in "Space Science and Technology." To commemorate this achievement and embark on the journey ahead, TIET organized a half-day symposium titled "ThaparSAT: An Initiative of TIET towards the Future of Space Programs in Punjab State" on May 24, 2024, at the Thapar Institute of Engineering.

The Punjab government institutions participated in the symposium; GS Majithia, Member Secretary Punjab Pollution Control Board, Mrs. Dapinder Bakshi, Joint Director Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Dr. Brijendra Pateria, Director Punjab Remote Sensing Center and Mr. Jaswinder Singh, CAO, Department of Agriculture. Dr. A.S. Pillai, Founder MD Brahmos Aerospace Ltd. Representatives of the space industry and other academic institutions of the country were present at the event.  

Shri RR Vadera, Chairman BoG, Dr. Padmakumar Nair, Director and Dr. Ajay Batish, Deputy Director, talked about the successful commissioning of Thaparsat. The highlights of the symposium were discussions on the importance of Thaparsat in future policy-making for agricultural development in the state, the need for start-ups in the space technology sector in the Punjab region and capacity building in colleges and the importance of Thaparsat for that.  

The symposium concluded with a commitment from government bodies, educational institutions, and the space technology industry to collaborate on the effective use of space technology for the benefit of society.
