In 2015, as part of the PM Package for Bihar, Central Govt announced the establishment of a new Central University near Bhagalpur
Even after seven years of announcement to establish Vikramshila University by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Bihar government is yet to provide ‘suitable’ land for its establishment.
In 2015, PM Modi as part of his PM Package for Bihar announced the establishment of a new Central University near Bhagalpur at the historic site of Vikramshila University. However, even after seven years, the Bihar government is not able to provide the land.
Vikramashila was one of the three most important universities in ancient India during the Pala Empire, along with Nalanda and Odantapuri. Its location is now the site of Antichak village, Bhagalpur district in Bihar. Vikramashila was established by the Pala emperor Dharmapala in response to a supposed decline in the quality of scholarship at Nalanda. The university was destroyed by Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji around 1193.
While replying to a question on whether the Government proposes to establish a new Central University at the historic site of Vikramshila University, Minister of State in the Education Ministry Dr Subhas Sarkar informed that the PM Package for Bihar, 2015 inter-alia provides for the establishment of a new Central University near Bhagalpur at the historic site of Vikramshila University.
The Government of Bihar has to offer the sites free from all encumbrances for the proposed University. The Site Selection Committee of the Education Ministry visited the sites offered by the Government of Bihar on 11th February 2022 and submitted the report. The Committee has requested another location as the proposed sites were not found suitable.
