While replying to a Lok Sabha question on the number of MBBS seats added in the last five years, the Union Health Minister stated that the government medical colleges added 8,854 more MBBS seats than private medical colleges.

The government medical colleges (GMCs) added 8,854 more MBBS seats in the last five years than the private medical colleges, as stated by Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The total MBBS seats added by GMCs are 16,729 and by private medical colleges are 7,875.

He informed the Lok Sabha that in the year 2017-18, there were 237 government medical colleges offering 31483 MBBS which increased to 322 by 2022-23 and the total MBBS seats offered became 48212.

The total number of private medical colleges was 243 and it increased to 290 now, earlier the private medical colleges were offering 36040 MBBS seats and now it increased to 43915 MBBS seats.

TN GMCs offer the largest number of MBBS seats

As per the health ministry, Tamil Nadu has the largest number of MBBS seats in government medical colleges (5,225 MBBS seats in 38 colleges), followed by Maharashtra (4,825 seats in 29 colleges), Uttar Pradesh (4,303 seats in 35 colleges), Gujarat (3,700 seats in 18 colleges), and West Bengal (3,225 seats in 20 colleges). Sikkim is the only state without a single government medical college. It has one private medical college with 150 MBBS seats.

Karnataka has the highest number of MBBS seats in private medical colleges (6,995 seats in 42 colleges), followed by Tamil Nadu (5,500 in 32), Maharashtra (5,070 in 33), Uttar Pradesh (4,750 in 32) and Telangana (3,200 in 23).
