At present, the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) students enrolled under courses that are approved and covered under the FRC are eligible to avail of scholarships.
The Gujarat government has announced its decision to distribute scholarships to students coming from SC, ST communities enrolled under courses that are not covered under the Fee Regulatory Committee (FRC). Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel took the decision during the state cabinet meeting held Wednesday in the larger interest of the students, an official press release from the government informed.
Scholarships for SC/ST students enrolled under non-FRC courses
At present, the Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) students enrolled under courses that are approved and covered under the FRC are eligible to avail of scholarship. However, with the announcement of the latest decision taken by the state CM, from now onwards, the SC/ST students who take admission in non-FRC courses run by private colleges and universities will also be considered eligible for government scholarships under the Freeship Card scheme, said the release.
Under this initiative, nearly 6,000 SC students and 12,000 students from the ST category will be benefitted. According to the information provided by the government, the Gujarat government would pay INR 36 crore towards their scholarships.
Garib Kalyan Melas in Gujarat
Gujarat government is conducting Garib Kalyan Melas in different parts of the state on February 24, 25 and 26. During the cabinet meeting, the Chief Minister along with other members also review the preparations being done for the Mela. The CM was also informed that the departments concerned have given a final shape to the state budget, which will be presented in the state Assembly on March 3, the release said.
