AAP Teachers' Wing Urges DU VC to Ensure Holistic Review of 12 Delhi Govt Funded Colleges
The committee, constituted by the Delhi University Executive Council (EC) on December 15th, 2023, was initiated following a letter from the Education Minister of the Delhi Government to the Union Education Minister
In response to the constitution of a committee by Delhi University to examine governance and funding concerns within 12 of its affiliated colleges fully funded by the Delhi Government, the Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) teachers' wing has made a fervent appeal to the Vice Chancellor. They are urging for the committee's transformation into a platform conducive to resolving the prolonged issues.
The committee, constituted by the Executive Council (EC) on December 15th, 2023, was initiated following a letter from the Education Minister of the Delhi Government to the Union Education Minister, dated December 1st, 2023. This move came after years of ongoing impasse and lack of dialogue, which the teachers claim stems from disregarding the legitimate rights and entitlements of the elected government.
The AAP teachers' wing highlighted several key points in their appeal:
They reaffirmed their commitment to the federal structure of Delhi University and its constituent colleges as defined by the DU Act 1922. They emphasized the integral role these 12 colleges play within the University, stressing that any attempts to separate them would promote privatization and contractualization, which they vehemently oppose.
Stressing the importance of financial stability for institutional development, the teachers emphasized the necessity of consistent and increased budgetary allocations. Despite a threefold increase in budgetary provisions for these colleges, they claim there's a need for further funding to meet infrastructural development, pending arrears, and staff-related expenses. They expressed concern over delays in fund disbursement, which has adversely affected the staff's financial stability.
They raised issues regarding the functioning of governing bodies in the 28 Delhi Government colleges, citing the lack of full-fledged governing bodies and selective extensions. Letters addressing governance concerns have allegedly been ignored, leading to a demand for dialogue and resolution of issues concerning legal frameworks and democratic morality.
In their appeal to the Vice Chancellor, the AAP teachers' wing urged the committee's transformation into a platform for constructive dialogue and initiatives to address these pressing concerns. They implored all relevant authorities to engage in resolving the issues affecting students, teachers, and staff in these colleges for the betterment of higher education.
The teachers also appealed to the Vice Chancellor to use their influence and authority to steer the committee towards a comprehensive resolution of the ongoing issues.
