Professor Naima Khatoon, formerly the Principal of the Women's College, has been appointed as the new Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU). She is the first woman to hold this role in the university's 123-year history. This appointment makes AMU the third central university to appoint its first female Vice Chancellor, following Jamia Millia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

As one of India's oldest universities, AMU had never appointed a woman as Vice-Chancellor until recently. However, in 1920, Begum Sultan Jahan was named Chancellor, and she remains the only woman to have ever held that position at AMU. Founded in 1875, Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College became Aligarh Muslim University in 1920, following the Aligarh Muslim University Act.

Naima Khatoon's appointment was made by the Ministry of Education (MoE) after receiving approval from President Droupadi Murmu, who is a Visitor to the University, as per IE reports. Permission was also sought from the Election Commission of India (ECI) given the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) being in place.

About Naima Khatoon

She also taught at the National University of Rwanda, Central Africa, for an academic year, and was appointed the Director, of the Centre for Skill Development & Career Planning, AMU, in October 2015.

She has authored/ co-authored/ edited six books and published several papers in journals of national and international repute. Since last year, Khatoon's husband, Professor Mohammad Gulrez, has served as the acting Vice Chancellor of the university. He stepped into the role after the previous Vice Chancellor, Tariq Mansoor, resigned to accept a nomination as a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.
