University Grants Commission Chairman, Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar urging colleges to apply for autonomous status has said that they will be able to offer different courses without administrative delays

The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP) aims to make the maximum number of colleges ‘autonomous’, it is an essential requirement if the college has to offer quality education to students, said University Grants Commission Chairman, Prof M. Jagadesh Kumar.

The NEP 2020 provides for autonomous status for colleges in a phased manner. Highlighting the benefits of autonomous colleges for students, Prof Kumar has stated that these colleges will be able to offer courses in emerging areas at undergraduate, and post-graduate levels and will also be able to offer certificate and diploma courses, without approval from parent universities, thus avoiding administrative delays.

Talking about the regulations to govern autonomous colleges, Prof Kumar said that in April 2023, the UGC announced a new set of regulations for autonomous colleges, these regulations are light but tight. As per the UGC Chairman, in order to get autonomous status a college must be in existence for 10 years and they should have gone through the NAAC or NBA accreditation.

The UGC started a portal on which colleges can submit their application for autonomous status, the existing university to which the college is affiliated will also share its input on the application. “In case the university does not provide any comment, it would be presumed that it does not have any objection to it,” says the UGC Chairman.

The autonomous application will be processed without any physical verification to the college by any committee as it has requisite qualifications based on NAAC/NBA accreditation status.

“We expect many colleges to apply for autonomous status on the online portal of the UGC and encourage them to provide high-quality education to students,” Prof Kumar said.
