UGC on May 3, 2023, launched Chayan portal- A unified portal for recruitment in all the central universities(CUs)

Aam Aadmi Party affiliated teachers association has termed the Chayan portal, less transparent and opaque. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a unified recruitment portal, CU-Chayan, for the recruitment of faculty in central universities.

UGC on May 3, 2023, launched the Chayan portal- A unified portal for recruitment in all the central universities(CUs), according to AADTA, the Chayan portal is to impose a centralised, controlled- and command-based structure over the universities as envisaged in NEP 2020, while seriously eroding their autonomy.

As per AADTA, certain important issues have not been given due consideration before bringing this a single unified portal for recruitment without any discussion with teachers' associations and statutory bodies of CUs.

It has stated that in the first instance, this online portal may look convenient, but it hides more than what it reveals. It is less transparent and opaque. For instance, an applicant receives her screening points only through the dashboard without knowing about other candidates. This hinders comparability and her ability to assess and evaluate the whole selection process.

“The advertisements bring more accountability for proper implementation of reservation roster. Secondly, in case of disputed rosters, it will become very difficult and cumbersome to get rectifications notified,” says the teachers association in a statement.

Aditya Narayan Misra, National Incharge, AADTA says: “If someone moves court then the whole process of recruitment will stop in all Indian Central University. This will hugely affect the teaching-learning process.”

It further states that this letter has no clarity, on whether UGC will publish advertisements in local newspapers or not. If advertisements will be published and available on the website only, then how candidates from remote and rural areas will know about advertisements.
