Delhi University Completes 4556 Faculty Appointments, To Resume Process Post Lok sabha Elections

University of Delhi's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Yogesh Singh, announced during the annual meeting of the DU Court that faculty appointments will resume after the Model Code of Conduct is lifted. The institution had already filled 4556 academic posts, but the process was halted due to the impending Lok Sabha elections. Prof. Singh emphasized that once the Model Code of Conduct is removed, the appointments for remaining vacant posts will recommence.

Regarding admissions, Prof. Singh provided detailed figures for the academic session 2023-24. A total of 69,622 students enrolled in undergraduate programs, while 11,174 students joined postgraduate programs. Additionally, 19,899 students applied for admission to PhD programs, with 1,655 students admitted in the first and second phases. The third phase of admissions for departments in the Faculty of Science commenced on March 26, with an appeal to heads of departments and principals to enhance PhD enrollments to bolster research activities.

Financially, Prof. Singh assured that the university is well-funded. An allocation of Rs 778.39 crore has been made under the General Institutional Assistance (GIA) for 2023-24, with an additional Rs 32.83 crore for infrastructure development under the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) category. The Finance Ministry has approved funding of Rs 938.33 crore from the Higher Education Funding Agency (HEFA) for seven projects, with two projects worth Rs 261.33 crore currently awaiting approval. Prof. Singh also disclosed that Rs 231.55 crore has been collected from student fees.

Union Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani has sanctioned Rs 272 crore under the Nirbhaya Fund for constructing 1000-bed residential facilities for female students and working women pursuing higher education at the University of Delhi.

The Vice Chancellor also shared positive news regarding the university's global standing. In the QS World University Rankings (Sustainability 2024), University of Delhi secured the 1st position in India and ranked 220th globally, with an impressive overall score of 73.4. Prof. Singh expressed the university's commitment to further improving its rankings on both national and international fronts in the upcoming year.
