Does Pondicherry Central University offer Reservations to Domicile students? Check Details

The university presently has 15 schools and 51 departments offering 158 postgraduate and research programmes.

Pondicherry University one of the 45 central universities has commenced admissions for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses. While the majority of the central universities like the University of Delhi, Banaras Hindu University, and Jawaharlal Nehru University do not offer any reservation to local students, there are some exceptions.

Pondicherry University is one such exception, as at present PU is providing 25 percent reservation to domicile students in its 21 courses. Apart from that, the university also offers 20 percent reservation for Pondicherry UT (Union Territory) candidates in MBA (Business Administration) courses.

While replying to a question on whether the Government is aware that 25 per cent reservation is allotted for Puducherry students in Pondicherry Central University for 21 courses started initially upto 2013 which were not extended to the new courses of about 150 started since 2013, Union Minister of State for Education informed that yes, at present Pondicherry University is providing 25% reservation for 21 courses.

In respect of MCA, M.Sc. Computer Science & M.Com. (Business Finance) courses which are offered in both Karaikal and Puducherry campuses, the university offers 25% for Karaikal residents at Karaikal campus, 25% for Puducherry, Mahe & Yanam residents at Puducherry campus.

The university also has a provision under which 10 students hailing from the Union Territory of Puducherry shall be admitted to M.Sc. Biotechnology programme based on the merit list on a supernumerary basis.

There is no reservation for the candidates of Union Territory of Puducherry in subsequently introduced (after 2013) 36 PG Courses, 10 PG integrated courses and 2 PG Diploma courses.

There is no provision for domicile-based reservation in admission in Central Universities in their Act and Statutes. Central Universities are governed by Central Education Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Act, 2006 as amended from time to time.

The university offers 158 postgraduate and research programs. There is no state or private university in Puducherry. All the government and private colleges are affiliated to Pondicherry University. Initially, 25% of the seats were reserved for the students f Puducherry in eight courses. Subsequently, it was extended to 21 courses only whereas the university presently has 15 schools and 51 departments offering 158 postgraduate and research programmes.
