DU Admissions 2021: First Cut-off this week, Important Developments on seats, courses

DU will release the first cut-off list for UG courses on October 1

The University of Delhi (DU) is likely to announce the first cut-off list for various undergraduate courses this week. Prof Rajeev Gupta, Chairman of Delhi University's admission committee speaking to Shiksha last week informed that the first cut-off for DU UG Admissions 2021 is most likely to be announced by October 1.

The undergraduate and postgraduate admission of DU this year also got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last date to submit the DU Application form 2021 for UG courses was August 31. As many as 4.38 candidates have registered for close to 70,000 UG seats being offered by various colleges of DU.

While for the postgraduate courses, it received around 1,83 lakh applications. For Mphil, PhD courses the Delhi University has announced that it has received close to 30,019 applications for the 2021 session.

October 1 is a tentative date on which the Delhi University will announce the first cut-ff for UG courses. DU has made some changes in the admission process this year, seats in some of the courses have gone up, while some of the DU Colleges have added new courses, while some have announced to provide relief to COVID affected students, while some colleges have slashed their fee structure.

DU Admissions: High Cut-off likely

The Class 12 Board results are likely to have a bearing on the Delhi University UG admissions this year and many of the officials of the university and principals of various have hinted that this year cut-off will be higher. The Class 12 results of CBSE, ISCE and other state boards have been very high this year compared to 2020, with a good number of students scoring above 95%.

Dr Alok Ranjan Pandey, a member of the DU Admission Committee said that DU will prepare cut-offs on the basis of data collected from colleges. It will first study the previous years’ data, including the number of admissions and cancellations under each cut-off for different courses, and on the basis of that, it will decide cut-offs.

However, the admission process for professional courses would remain the same which will be through entrance tests (DUET), which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA)

Last year, Lady Sri Ram College for Women has fixed 100% cutoff for courses like BA (Hons) Economics, BA (Hons) Political Science and BA (Hons) Psychology. Similarly, the first Cut-off for BCom (Honours) at SRCC was 99.5% and that for BA Economics (Honours) was 99%. Another DU College, Hansraj College also came up with cut-off close to 99% for some of the courses like BA Economics (Honours) and B.Com which were 98.00% and 99.25%, respectively.

Hansraj College Principal, Dr Rama Sharma speaking to Shiksha said that this year again the cut-offs for some of the courses are likely to be higher.

New Courses, seat increase

Delhi University has around 70,000 UG seats offered by various colleges, though there is huge competition for every seat of Delhi University, to accommodate more students in line with the new National Education Policy (NEP) recommendation, some of the DU colleges are planning to introduce ode number of courses this year. Some of the colleges are also planning to increase the number of seats in some of the courses.

As reported earlier by Shiksha, As many as 14 colleges of the university are planning to launch nearly two dozen UG and PG courses from the upcoming academic session. If the colleges get the approval to launch these courses, the number of UG-PG seats in DU would go up by 900.

Jesus and Mary College, Bhagini Nivedita College and Motilal Nehru College are planning to start BA Programme in Physical Education this year. Shyam Lal College is planning to start BSc (Honors) Botany, BSc (Honors) Computer Science and BSc (Honors) Operational Research.

Janki Devi Memorial College is also planning to start three UG courses: BSc (Honors) Computer Science, BSc (Honors) Operational Research, BSc (Honors) Statistics. There are some more colleges which are planning similar moves.

DU Admission process to remain online

With the second wave of COVID-19 still far from over in the country, Delhi University will keep its entire UG-PG admission process online. “This time, the entire admission process, including verification of documents will be online,” Pandey informed Shiksha.

The application process is over, and the cut-offs are likely to be out soon, following which earlier students had to visit the respective colleges based on their Class 12 marks to seek admission where their documents were verified.

This year the entire document verification will be done online by Delhi University. While submitting their forms candidates were required to submit their educational and other extracurricular documents on the DU website. The documents include: Class 10 Mark Sheet or certificate, Class 12 Provisional Original Certificate/ Mark Sheet, Character Certificate, Transfer/ Migration Certificate, PWD/ ST/ SC/OBC - NCL (Non-Creamy Layer) Certificate, Kashmir Migrant Certificate (Only those applying under Kashmir Migrant Quota) • Educational Concession Certificate (Only CW Quota) • ECA Distinction/ Sports Certificate (last three years).

COVID-19 Relief to students

The Delhi University has urged colleges to provide relief to students affected due to COVID-19. Some of the colleges have come forward and have announced that they would give fee waivers to the student who has lost either of their parents or both the parents due to the pandemic.

Some of the colleges have also started counselling sessions for students and teachers affected due to COVID-19.

Rajdhani College, one of the affiliated colleges of the university, has reduced the annual fees by Rs 2,010 for the academic year 2021-22 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The annual fee at Rajdhani college was Rs 3,370, and now it has come down to Rs 1,360 with a relaxation of Rs 2,010 for the second-and-third- year students.

There are 91 institutions affiliated with the University of Delhi, which are spread all over Delhi offering various undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with some running in morning and evening shifts, like PGDAV College, Dyal Singh College, Motilal Nehru College.
