MGCU administration is facing allegations of making appointments, establishing centres by flouting UGC guidelines.

The Government of India has sought a report from Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU) over reports of alleged cases of irregularities in setting up new departments. The University administration is facing allegations of making appointments by flouting UGC guidelines.

Mahatma Gandhi Central University (MGCU), Motihari is one of the two central universities established in Bihar, however, since its inception the university has been more in negative news than positive. Its former Vice-Chancellor Arvind Agrawal resigned before completing his term over allegations of fake degrees. He was replaced by Sanjeev Sharma, whose appointment also landed in soup over allegations of fake degree and sexual harassment charges against him.

During his tenure Center for Gandhian Research has been established at the university and there are allegations of making appointments by flouting University Grants Commission guidelines at this centre.
Looking into these allegations, the Ministry of Education has sought clarification from the university over alleged irregularities.

It is to be noted that the term of Sanjeev Sharma was extended last year, which was supposed to end on February 2, 2021.

While replying to a question of alleged irregularities at MGCU, Minister of State for Education, Subhas Sarkar said that taking cognizance of news published in the leading newspaper/complaint regarding
