MAHE Appoints Cherian Varghese as Director of Prasanna School of Public Health
Manipal Academy of Higher Education appointed Dr Cherian Varghese as the new Professor and Director of Prasanna School of Public Health, effective July 4, 2024.
Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE) has appointed Dr Cherian Varghese as the new Director of Prasanna School of Public Health. The appointment has been effective July 4, 2024 onwards. Dr Varghese has over two decades of experience including employment at the World Health Organization (WHO), where he held the position of Coordinator for Noncommunicable Diseases (NCD) & determinants, and Acting Director of Healthier Populations and Noncommunicable Diseases (HPN) at the South-East Asia Regional Office in New Delhi, India.
About Dr Cherian Varghese
Dr Varghese completed his MBBS from the University of Kerala in 1985. Further, he then earned a Diploma in Medical Radiotherapy (DMRT) and an MD in Radiation Oncology from Christian Medical College, Vellore. M.Phil. in Epidemiology from the University of Cambridge, UK, and a PhD in Medicine (Epidemiology) from the University of Tampere, Finland are also a part of his academic excellence. Besides, he was awarded a Membership of the National Academy of Medical Sciences in Clinical Epidemiology (MNAMS), India in 2001.
He started his professional career at the Regional Cancer Centre in Trivandrum in 1990, where he established the cancer epidemiology and clinical research unit. During his tenure, he instituted the cardiovascular disease control program SEAHEARTS and designated SEACANGRID to enhance cancer control in the province.
Dr Varghese holds over 90 publications and prestigious fellowships and awards, including the IARC (WHO) Fellowship, the Norman Campbell Excellence Award in Population Hypertension Prevention and Control and the WHO Regional Director’s Award for Excellence in 2023
