Nagaland University Organises Linguistics Conference; 65 Participants Joined Across Globe

The linguistics conference was attended by two founding members of NEILS, Prof Jyotiprakash Tamuli and Dr Stephen Morey where Prof Tamuli delivered a plenary talk on 'Raising the stakes: linguistics in education.'
North East Indian Linguistics Society (NEILS) Begins its 13th Linguistic Conference on February 7, 2025. Over 65 registered from India and abroad grced the event. The Pro Vice-Chancellor of Kohima Campus, Prof. G.T. Thong encouraged attendees to conduct in-depth research on the languages of Nagaland and the North East. The event was held at the Kohima Campus of Nagaland University and was attended by Founding NEILS members Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamuli from Gauhati University and Dr. Stephen Morey from La Trobe University also participated in the conference.
The event began with a welcome speech from Dr. Petekhrienuo Sorhie, Head of the Department of Tenyidie gave the welcome speech while Dr. Stephen Morey gave the introduction about NIELS. The plenary talk, titled "Raising the Stakes: Linguistics in Education," was presented by Prof. Jyoti Prakash Tamuli.
About Nagaland University Linguistic Conference
Hosted by the Department of Tenyidie, the 13th linguistic conference will conclude on February 8. NEILS was founded by Jyoti Prakash Tamuli, Stephen Morey, and Mark W. Post. From the year 2007 to 2012, the event was held annually and has been held biannually since 2014 in Assam during January or February.
The inaugural NEILS meeting took place at the seminar hall at Gauhati University and most of the subsequent conferences were held at the Don Bosco Institute (Don Bosco College of Engineering & Technology) in Guwahati.
Aim of Linguistic Conference
The core function of NEILS is to document and describe the linguistic and cultural diversity of North East India. Details at the conferences focus mainly on descriptive linguistics, often viewed through functional-typological or anthropological-linguistic lenses. The speech also includes the languages spoken in neighbouring regions such as Myanmar, China, Bhutan and Bangladesh.
