New 4-year integrated B.Ed course formulated; to begin from this session

The new 4-year integrated B.Ed programme will save a year of students. Students can choose from either B.SC-B.Ed, B.Com-B.Ed or B.A-B.Ed, depending on their stream. Read more below.

The new 4-year integrated B.Ed programme has been formulated by the government and the first session of the same will begin from this academic year. A notification for the same has been issued and institutions that desire to introduce the course will soon be able to do so. According to officials, the course, the syllabus for which has been finalized, will save a year of students.

The integrated B.Ed programme is of three types, different for students from Science, Commerce and Arts streams. They would be able to undertake either B.A-B.Ed, B.Sc-B.Ed or B.Com-B.Ed.

HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that after amendments in the Right to Education Act, all teachers left out can avail the training till October 31, 2019. This is to ensure that all the teachers get trained. According to him, around 7 lakh teachers received training till 2015 but a lot many are left untrained. As per Section 23(1) of the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education (RTE) Act, 2009, it is mandatory for all teachers to undergo training. There are 19,542 teacher training institutions in the country imparting 25,876 courses for teacher training.

The National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) has issued guidelines for the conduct of Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). As per the guidelines, the appropriate Government should conduct a TET at least once every year. The validity period of TET qualifying certificate for appointment will be decided by the appropriate Government subject to a maximum of seven years for all categories.
