SC Asks Centre To Consider Relocation of Manipur Violence-Affected Students To Central Universities
The Supreme Court has asked the Centre and Manipur government to consider the appeal by 284 students from Manipur University, who are seeking to be transferred to various central universities across the nation. The aim is to prevent the wastage of their academic year.
The Supreme Court directed both the Centre and the Manipur government to address the grievance of 284 students from Manipur University, who are requesting transfer to central universities to ensure no loss of studies due to the violence in the state.
The court heard a plea from the Manipur University EIMI Welfare Society, highlighting that these students have already faced approximately six months of educational setbacks and advocated for their relocation to other central universities.
Senior advocate Meenakshi Arora, representing the petitioners, urged a bench led by Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud to issue a directive allowing students affected by violence in Manipur to be admitted to other central universities.
Representing the Manipur University EIMI Welfare Society and others, Arora stressed that the students were experiencing significant time loss, with six months already wasted of the academic session due to the state's unrest. This situation compelled them to consider relocating elsewhere.
The bench, however, directed Solicitor General Tushar Mehta and the Advocate General of Manipur to examine the issue and scheduled the matter for further hearing on December 4, 2023 (Monday).
