The universities may include other subjects under CBCS in consultation with their Academic Council /Board of studies in line with UGC guidelines

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has allowed universities to include more subjects under the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). At present UGC has allowed 107 subjects under the CBCS scheme.

The UGC has issued a letter to vice-chancellors of all the universities allowing them to include more subjects under CBCS in consultation with the statuary bodies like the Academic Council /Board of studies.

Regarding the implementation of a uniform Choice Based Credit System, the template prepared by the UGC giving the guidelines and instructions on parameters to be followed are available on the UGC website and universities can refer to that.

The UGC letter reads: “The universities may include other subjects under CBCS in consultation with their Academic Council /Board of studies in line with guidelines, basic template and essential parameter as notified by the UGC. The universities may obtain approval of the statutory council wherever relevant or necessary.”

The CBCS allows students to choose inter-disciplinary, intra-disciplinary courses, skill-oriented papers (even from other disciplines according to their learning needs, interests and aptitude) and provide more flexibility for students in learning.

It also allows students the flexibility of selecting the subjects of their choice as subjects are categorised into various groups allowing students to select subjects of their interest under each group.

The UGC provides guidelines for the minimum credit required to obtain an undergraduate degree like BA/B.Com Honours, BA/B.Com and B.Sc, B.Sc Honours and also the number of credits to be obtained in each group.

UGC has also allowed central and state universities to deviate the syllabi from the stipulated norm by up to 20%.

The CBCS also adopts a semester pattern, and it also uses a credit-based grading system instead of a percentage-wise system.
