Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Launches PM-USHA Scheme in Odisha, Questions Legacy of Ravenshaw University
Pradhan sparked controversy by questioning the legacy of T.E. Ravenshaw, after whom Ravenshaw University is named, by suggesting name change.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan marked a significant day for Odisha’s education sector by announcing the implementation of the PM-USHA scheme in the state. During a ceremony attended by Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Pradhan emphasized the scheme's potential to transform state universities into world-class multidisciplinary institutions.
The PM-USHA scheme, with a funding ratio of 60:40 between the Centre and the state, will inject Rs 500 crore into Odisha's higher education infrastructure. Pradhan described this initiative as a crucial step towards universal and inclusive education, bringing administrative reforms to universities, government-aided colleges, and other educational institutions.
Pradhan highlighted Odisha's potential, stating, "Odisha is blessed with talented human capital. PM Narendra Modi ji and CM Shri @MohanMOdisha are committed to equipping Odisha’s youth with 21st-century knowledge and skills." The MoU signed between the Odisha Higher Education Department and the Union Education Ministry aims to enhance teaching and learning processes, paving the way for new educational institutions and overall development in the higher education sector.
In a separate event in Cuttack, during a function to mark Local Self-Governance Day, Pradhan sparked controversy by questioning the legacy of T.E. Ravenshaw, after whom Ravenshaw University is named. Pradhan raised concerns about Ravenshaw's role during the 1866 Na’ Aanka famine, which claimed the lives of 3 million Odias. "What did Ravenshaw, after whom the university is named, do during the famine that hurt Odia pride? It is a matter of pride," Pradhan questioned, suggesting a possible name change for the university.
However, Pradhan clarified that his remarks were personal and urged intellectuals in Odisha to debate the issue. The proposal received backlash from alumni and educationists, with many defending the historical significance of Ravenshaw University.
