UPES Collaborates with Medical University of Americas to Offer 5 Year BSc MD Programme
Through this collaboration with MUA, UPES will provide an accelerated route into medical education, offering admissions to the esteemed 5-year BSc/MD undergraduate program (1+2+2 years). Applications will open in February 2025 for the August 2025 intake.
The School of Health Sciences and Technology (SOHST) at UPES has formed a partnership with the Medical University of the Americas (MUA). As part of this collaboration, UPES will offer admissions to the 5-Year BSc/MD undergraduate program (1+2+2 years), with applications opening in February 2025 for the August 2025 intake. The program includes one year at UPES, followed by two years of pre-clinical education at MUA’s campus on St. Kitts, Nevis Island, and two years of clinical rotations at affiliated hospitals in the U.S.
Curriculum Explained
In the first year, students will be enrolled in the Pre-Medical Certificate Program at the School of Health Sciences and Technology (SOHST) at UPES. Upon successfully completing the first year, they will earn approximately 47 credits, which can be transferred to MUA for progression. Additionally, students will receive a USD 50,000 scholarship, distributed over 13 semesters at MUA.
Students have to maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. The following two years of the program will focus on the basic medical education, delivered at MUA's academic campus on the island of Nevis. During this period, students will complete five semesters of Basic Sciences. Afterwards, they will travel to the U.S. to undertake five semesters of clinical rotations at teaching hospitals, clinics, and medical centres affiliated with MUA.
Speaking on the collaboration, Dr. Padma Venkat, Dean of the School of Health Sciences and Technology (SOHST), UPES, stated: “Through this partnership with the MUA, the School of Health Sciences and Technology, UPES will create opportunities by offering a world-class alternative for talented students. This partnership will give them access to high-quality medical education, global exposure, and a structured pathway to practice internationally while addressing the critical need for doctors in India.”
