Dheeraj Rajendran, a BTech Computer Science student of Government Engineering College, Idukki, and an activist of the Student Federation of India (SFI), was stabbed to death during a clash with Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists.

Dheeraj Rajendran (21), a BTech Computer Science student of Government Engineering College, Idukki, and an activist of the Student Federation of India (SFI), was stabbed to death during a clash with Kerala Students Union (KSU) activists. 

Along with Dheeraj, two others, T Abhijith and Amal, were seriously injured in clashes that broke out at the Government Engineering College in Idukki, Kerala, on Monday. While Dheeraj succumbed to injuries, the injured are undergoing treatment at Idukki Medical College. 

Youth Congress leader arrested 

As per the police, the clash broke out between the student outfits over college elections, voting for which ended on Monday. The police said they have detained Youth Congress Vazhathope mandalam president Nikhil Paily for the incident and further investigation into the case is on. 

The SFI alleged that one KSU activist from their college and Youth Congress attacked Dheeraj and others there, leading to the death of Dheeraj. Meanwhile, the principal of Government Engineering College, Idukki, confirmed the news and announced that the college and hostel will remain shut till further notice. 

Kerala Chief Minister condoles student’s death 

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has condemned the incident and said attempts to create riots in colleges will be not allowed. He took to Facebook to condemn the death of Dheeraj. He wrote, “Murder of Dheeraj Rajendran, a student of Govt Engineering College, Idukki, and an SFI activist, is extremely sad and condemnable. Attempts to create riots in colleges will not be allowed. Police have been directed to bring Dheeraj's killers before law.”
