IIT Bombay alumnus is new Twitter CEO

Parag Agrawal holds a PhD in computer science from Stanford University, US, and a bachelor’s degree in computer science and engineering from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay.

Twitter’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO) Parag Agrawal, who is an IIT Bombay alumnus, will succeed Jack Dorsey as the company’s Chief Executive Officer, the social media platform has announced. Dorsey will remain on the board until his term ends in 2022.  

Who is Parag Agrawal? 

Parag Agrawal, 37, has been with Twitter since 2011 and has served as CTO since October 2017. He studied BTech in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay and completed his PhD from Stanford University in the US. 

As CTO, he has been overseeing machine learning and artificial intelligence. Before joining Twitter, he was working with collaborators at Microsoft Research, Yahoo! Research, and AT&T Labs. 
In a statement, Twitter said while Dorsey is stepping down and Agrawal’s appointment in the executive role will be effective immediately, the outgoing CEO will continue to be on the company’s board till the end of his term next year.

Dorsey said in a statement, “I’ve decided to leave Twitter because I believe the company is ready to move on from its founders. My trust in Parag as Twitter’s CEO is deep. His work over the past 10 years has been transformational. I’m deeply grateful for his skill, heart, and soul. It’s his time to lead.”  

Expressing gratitude on Twitter, Parag wrote, “Deep gratitude for @jack (Jack Dorsey) and our entire team, and so much excitement for the future. Here’s the note I sent to the company. Thank you all for your trust and support.” 

IIT Bombay congratulates alumnus 

Meanwhile, IIT Bombay took to Twitter to congratulate its alumnus Parag Agrawal on his elevation as CEO of the social media platform. It tweeted, “Congratulations to our alumnus Dr. Parag Agrawal for being appointed the new CEO of Twitter. Dr. Agrawal obtained his http://B.Tech. degree in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay in 2005. He started working at Twitter in 2011 & became the CTO in 2017. #iitb”
