Jadavpur University professor barred from campus due to alleged rape attempt

The international relations department of Jadavpur University has removed professor Herkan Neadan Toppo from the post of supervisor of MPhil. The dean of arts Anindya Jyoti Majumdar has been appointed for the post.

Jadavpur University has barred one of its professors from the International Relations (IR) department. The professor has been banned from entering the college campus after being allegedly accused of attempting to rape a researcher. Police have identified the accused as Herkan Neadan Toppo. According to TOI report, Toppo has been debarred from the IR department for his alleged attempts to rape an MPhil student.

Supervisor of MPhil scholar to be changed

Following the incident, the authorities have decided to change the supervisor of the MPhil scholar. Talking about the incidence, Imankalyan Lahiri, head of the department, told TOI, "As directed by the vice-chancellor and dean, faculty of arts, the supervisor of the MPhil scholar will be changed and necessary action will be taken so that she can submit her thesis and apply for her PhD programme.”

A general body meeting was called by the MPhil student near World View on Monday regarding the security and safety of women in the Jadavpur University campus.

The student claimed that the professor tried to rape her after calling her in his quarters on Saturday afternoon to discuss the research project.

As per the latest reports, the international relations department of Jadavpur University has removed professor Herkan Neadan Toppo from the post of supervisor of MPhil. The dean of arts Anindya Jyoti Majumdar has been appointed for the post as the new supervisor. The move came after an MPhil student alleged that she had been molested by Toppo. However, the accused professor also filed a complaint at the Jadavpur police station. An investigation has been commenced by the Police in this matter.
