JEE Main 2022: Students demand removal of 75% eligibility criteria, flood Twitter with #Scrap75percentforJee2022

As per the JEE Main 2022 eligibility criteria, students should have passed Class 12 with a minimum of 75 per cent marks or they should be in the top 20 percentile in Class 12 (65 per cent for SC/ST candidates).  

Even as the National Testing Agency (NTA) is yet to release a notification regarding JEE Main 2022, students are demanding the Education Ministry to waive the Class 12 board marks as eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2022.  

According to the JEE Main 2022 eligibility criteria, candidates should have secured at least 75 per cent marks in Class 12 or be in the top 20 percentile in Class 12/qualifying examination conducted by the respective boards to be eligible for admission. For Scheduled Caste (SC)/Scheduled Tribe (ST) candidates, the qualifying marks criteria in JEE Main 2022 is 65 per cent in Class 12/qualifying examination.  

In 2021, then Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal had exempted 75 per cent criteria in Class 12 to be eligible for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), School of Planning and Architecture (SPAs) and Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). 

Students have taken to Twitter to make their voices heard. While one aspirant tweeted, “In the last two years, JAB has relaxed 75% criteria for admission in JEE Mains and Advanced due to covid-19 pandemic. I appeal to Ministry of Education, please scrap 75% criteria for JEE Mains and Advanced for this year also,” another wrote, “More than 1/2of 2020-21 went in online classes which weren’t effective enough. CBSE marks will not be justified so remove 75% criteria for this year too like past two years take a quick action about it as it is affecting our current preparations too #Scrap75percentforJee2022 @DG_NTA.” Check the reactions below:
