Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar has announced setting up nine medical colleges in Karnataka under the Public-private partnership (PPP) model.
Karnataka Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar has said that as many as nine medical colleges will be established in the state in districts of Vijayapura, Bengaluru rural, Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, Kolar, Bagalkot, Davangere, Chitradurga, and Tumakur. These medical colleges will be set up under the Public-private partnership (PPP) model.
He said the state needs INR 610 crore for the building of a medical college and INR 60 crore for rotatory expenses and if the Central government does not release funds, it is very challenging for Karnataka to construct a medical college, hence the state government has come up with a PPP model to set up these medical colleges, as reported by Indian Express.
As per reports, the state government requires INR 670 crores to start a medical college and the Central government provides 60% grants and the remaining 40% comes from the state government. In the year 2014-15, along with the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, the Karnataka government had announced setting up medical colleges in several districts but the building of medical colleges in some districts could not be started due to financial issues.
In the year 2019-20, the Union government came up with new guidelines that stated that if any district already has a government or private medical college, then it will not be granted approval for a second medical college.
