Kerala High Court has asked the Medical Education Board to consider the representations of two NGOs working for the welfare of the LGBTQ community against alleged queer-phobic contents in medical textbooks.

Two non-governmental organisations (NGOs) working for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ) community have alleged that the contents in the medical textbooks are stereotyped the LGBTQ community's sexual or gender identities as a mental disorder or perversion or an offence. Responding to the NGOs' petition, the Kerala High Court has directed the Undergraduate Medical Education Board to consider these NGOs' representations against alleged queer-phobic contents in medical textbooks.

As per the NGO's in the medical textbooks, inhuman references and discriminatory remarks have been made with regard to the LGBTQ community.

The court has asked the Kerala University of Health Sciences to provide its views to the Medical Education Board on the allegations without waiting for a copy of the court order.

On September 7, the Court directed the Medical Education Board to first obtain the remarks and views of the university before taking the final decision and the decision needs to be finalised within eight weeks of receiving the instant order, added the court.
