Kerala School Reopening: The government of Kerala on September 23 announced that the schools will be reopening in the state from November 1. Considering the health and safety of students and staff members, the government has also released a set of guidelines for schools regarding the use of vehicles for transporting students when the educational institutions reopen.
According to the tweets posted by the official handle of the Kerala Government, “A motor vehicle inspector will check the fitness of the vehicle and it should go through a trial run and receive a fitness certificate. Drivers and attenders should get two-dose vaccinations and the vehicle should be equipped with sanitizer and a thermal scanner.” During a press conference, Minister for Transport, Kerala, Antony Raju, said that all vehicles meant for school trips should complete maintenance and attain a fitness certificate by October 20. If any school relies on contract-carriage vehicles, it is the duty of the owners and concerned schools to ensure that the inspection and certification process is complete.
While releasing the detailed ‘Students Transportation Protocol’, the minister claimed that “Kerala was the first state in the country to prepare one with the aim of ensuring the safety of school students amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.”
The protocols released by Kerala also state that the drivers and attendees of the vehicles must be fully vaccinated. Schools have been directed to maintain a register of their daily body temperature. Any student or staff with COVID-19 symptoms will not be allowed to travel in school vehicles. All vehicles must be equipped with thermal scanners and hand sanitizers. Students have been asked to wear masks and carry personal sanitizers. Only one student is allowed per seat. No standing travel will be allowed. Air conditioning will not be operational inside the vehicles. Cloth curtains have been asked to be removed from the windows.
