A plea has been submitted by a second year law student of Delhi University (DU) in the Delhi High Court wherein it has been stated that around 500 seats to 700 seats remain vacant in DU’s LLB programme, each year. It has been further shared that students block seats in the law programme in which admission is offered each year through DU LLB entrance exam without an intention to take admission in the course on offer.
Sources share that each year about 30% LLB seats at DU are wasted as some non-serious students either take admission to get a hostel room and then keep on preparing for other entrance test. Apart from this, students also take admission in DU’s LLB course as a back-up plan.
Thus, this blocking of seats is hindering chances of a serious and deserving candidate from securing admission in his/her preferred course/college.
To help solve this issue, the petitioner has suggested that the Bar Council of India (BCI) as well as DU’s Faculty of Law should ask aspirants to sign a mandatory bond of Rs 5 lakh or any other appropriate amount.
Delhi University offers three year LLB programme to aspirants by means of an entrance exam. The test pattern of the exam is such that candidates need to attempt multiple choice questions from topics such as English Language Comprehension, Reasoning and Analytical Abilities, General Knowledge and Current Affairs as well as Legal Awareness and Aptitude.
DU has been in the eye of the storm since last year regarding its LLB course. Last year, the Delhi High Court heard pleas regarding reduction in seats in DU’s LLB programme. After much deliberation the High Court had directed the varsity to offer admission to fill 2611 seats in its law programme.
