78 students of Dharmashastra NLU approach HC against huge fee for remedial classes

Dharmashastra National Law University, Jabalpur has decided to charge INR 7500 per subject for remedial classes for students who were debarred from writing the term-end examination due to a shortage of attendance. Against this decision, nearly 78 students of the university have moved to Madhya Pradesh High Court.

The students have filed a plea in the high court which stated that since they have already been debarred from writing the term-end examination, how can they be asked to pay INR 7500 per subject in the name of the remedial classes so as to become eligible to write the term-end examination, as reported by Live Law.

The petitioners were debarred from writing the term-end examination due to a shortage of attendance and later on they were given the option to appear for the remedial classes to fulfil the minimum attendance requirement and become eligible for re-examination.

The students have argued that as per earlier rules if students were debarred due to short attendance, they were allowed for re-examination after payment of INR 500, however, INR 7500 is many folds increase from that amount.

These students also alleged that the university has failed to conduct the mandatory number of lectures as mandated by BCI which is 24 lecture hours per week (excluding tutorials, moot room exercises and seminars) for not less than 18 weeks, which totals to 432 hours of lectures. As per the plea, only 21 hours of lectures have been conducted per week as per the academic calendar for the session 2021-22, the total number of operating weeks is 13, which when multiplied by 21 gives a total of 273 hours of lecture, which is much less than the recommended 432 hours.
