To ensure transparency and ethical standards in the law profession, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has released important regulations for all the Centres of Legal Education (CLES), including law colleges, institutes and varsities across the nation.
As per the new notification, it is now mandatory for law students to undergo criminal background checks. They also have to make full declarations regarding their academic and employment status. The move comes as an initiative by BCI to ensure that legal field maintain high moral and ethical standards.

As per the new rule, law students must disclose any involvement in criminal activities, including if any FIR has been filed against them as well as any history of convictions or acquittals. It must be noted that any individual not providing their accurate information will face severe consequences.

To uphold academic integrity, the BCI, by Chapter II, Rule 6 of the Rules of Legal Education, mandates that law students cannot engage in another degree program while pursuing their LLB studies. This regulation guarantees that students give their legal studies their whole focus. Final academic qualifications may be withheld if noncompliance is maintained.

Students must also disclose their work status by the regulations. If a student works during their program, they need to get a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from their employer. Furthermore, the BCI has enforced stringent compliance standards, assigning CLEs the duty of upholding these guidelines and promptly reporting any deviations to the BCI.
