NTA said it can conduct CLAT (UG) in computer-based test mode, like JEE (Main) and CUET (UG), in consultation with the consortium. We have a pool of experts and translators on a wide range of subjects to prepare question papers in multiple languages (including major Indian languages)," the NTA informed the HC.
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has told the Delhi High Court that it can conduct the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) in English and regional languages. At present, the CLAT Exam is conducted only in English. The NTA made the submission in front of the Delhi HC in a response to a PIL plea for conducting CLAT in regional languages along with English.
CLAT 2024 is scheduled to be held on December 3, 2023. The hearing has been now listed for October 6.
"We have a pool of experts and translators on a wide range of subjects to prepare question papers in multiple languages (including major Indian languages)," the NTA informed the HC." We have been conducting workshops for test developers or subject experts in batches of 35-40 to develop question banks for its examinations. Accordingly, the Question Papers in respect of the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT)-UG can be translated into other Indian languages, such as Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu and design/printing the requisite OMR Answer Sheet in the required quantity depending upon the number of candidates to be scheduled for the said Test,” the agency has said. “Hence, in principle, NTA would be in a position to conduct the CLAT Examination in English and other Indian Languages as mentioned above.”
However, the testing agency also clarified that if it wil conduct the CLAT Exam, then it will only be possible in the third or fourth week of January 2024, considering that at least four months are required for the development, translation, proofreading and vetting of the question paper as well as for the finalisation of exam centres in major cities as per the past practice, movement of exam functionaries and materials to the exam centres, and other pre-exam preparations.
"In such a scenario, support of the secretariat of the Consortium of National Law Universities, which conducts CLAT, would be of great assistance for the smooth and fair conduct of the test," the NTA further said. The agency said it can conduct CLAT (UG) in computer-based test mode, like JEE (Main) and CUET (UG), in consultation with the consortium.
