First deaf lawyer clears AIBE after death on April 22

The first deaf lawyer, Soudamini Pethe, has cleared the All India Bar Examination (AIBE). Unfortunately, she is not here to celebrate her achievement as she passed away on April 22, 2023, after a sudden bout of breathlessness. She had earlier said that she wanted to work for the rights of the hearing impaired and help them gain access to education, healthcare and justice.

She wanted more deaf youth to join the legal profession and contribute to the cause. She aimed to spread more awareness and empower the deaf with knowledge of their legal rights, as reported by India Legal Live.

Soudamini Pethe was known for her activism on challenges faced by the deaf community. Her vision as an advocate was to bridge the gap between the deaf and those who can hear for equal opportunity in terms of access to resources and surroundings.

Advocate Sanchita N, who worked with Pethe, remembered her friend fondly and said, "I offered her to come with me to the Supreme Court and argue my case with the help of an interpreter. Unfortunately, the matter did not get listed on that day. Then I asked her to appear in the Delhi High Court in the case of the National Federation of the Deaf. She was overjoyed and looking forward to her first physical court appearance to the extent that she came down with a fracture! How often do you see such passion in a colleague? They have events to attend, and clothes to buy before they formally join. She came from Faridabad with a fractured leg at such short notice! We visited some of the courtrooms with an interpreter and a wheelchair to check the accessibility requirements at several levels," as reported by Bar and Bench.
