NLSIU releases provisional list; 19 Karnataka's General category students shown under domicile

NLSIU has released the first provisional list for admissions for the academic year 2023-24, and it erupted a controversy as even 19 students of Karnataka belonging to the general category have also been included in the domicile quota, and some of them are the ranked holders of CLAT 2022 from Karnataka.

There are a total of 240 seats being offered by the university of which 60 are meant for Karanata students under the domicile horizontal quota but in the provisional list released, the domicile students quota has also included those Karnataka students who are of the general category and holding rank 12, 23, 27, 32, and 49 in CLAT 2022, as reported by TOI.

"All admissions to NLSIU’s B.A., LL.B. (Hons.) and LL.M. programmes are based exclusively on the scores candidates receive in the Common Law Admission Test, which is administered by the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs). On completion of the exam every year, the Consortium draws up a merit rank list based on examination performance. Based on this rank list, the Consortium administers admission to law programmes at 22 participating NLUs ensuring that all vertical and horizontal reservation categories are satisfied. The Consortium administers State horizontal reservations in 21 NLUs. Admission for Karnataka Students at NLSIU is implemented in an identical manner to State horizontal reservations at every other NLU. Admissions to the open, vertical, and horizontal reservation categories are carried out by the Consortium, in accordance with the norms laid down by the Hon’ble Supreme Court," reads NLSIU statement.
