All students, except those studying in final years, will be promoted to next year, the Bar Council of India directed the law colleges and universities around the country.

Amid the ongoing coronavirus crisis, the Bar Council of India (BCI) has directed all the universities and colleges in the country to promote all the students, except those in final years, on the basis of performance of previous year’s marks and marks obtained in the internal examination of the current year.

Along with this, the BCI has also asked universities to conduct online examination for final year students of 3 Years LL.B and 5 Years LL.B courses.

In a notification, released by BCI, it also mentioned that the Universities can adopt any other appropriate method which they feel is adequate to satisfy the requirements of regular examination. Under this system, the University may allow students to write a project report/research paper for each paper of final year or they may adopt a full proof method to
double the internal marks of the semester exams already held for such a year.

Ultimately, it is up to the university to decide. “For Final year LLB students...the universities may adopt any other appropriate method which they feel is adequate to satisfy the requirements of regular examination," the statement adds. The same policy applies to students in the final year but still has pending or supplementary exams from previous years to write.

The Council further added that students of intermediate semesters who want to improve their scores can sit for the improvement exams to be held later.

The Council also clarified that Universities and the colleges, upon its reopening, will conduct the end semester examinations for all the students promoted. Such promoted students will continue to study in the year to which they have been promoted.
“In case, they are unable to pass/clear any such paper of such end-semester exam of the year from which they have been promoted, they shall have to clear the same, before they are granted the degree,” the guidelines added. The universities have been further directed to observe “Coronavirus safety protocol” and ensure that social distancing is followed in the campus after its reopening. The classrooms and exam halls will be sanitised regularly to ensure the safety of students.
