Madras HC directs to install Ambedkar portrait in TN govt law colleges

While hearing a petition filed by a fourth-year law student from Theni Government Law College, Justice GR Swaminathan of Madurai Bench of Madras High Court requested the Director of Legal Studies, Chennai, to issue a circular mandating installation of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar’s portrait in all government law colleges in Tamil Nadu.

During the court proceedings, he noticed that Ambedkar's portrait was also missing in his court chamber as well, the judge resolved to rectify the same at the earliest and disposed of the petition.

The court also observed that freedom fighters in India are reduced to caste symbols even after 75 years of Independence, as reported by Indian Express.

The petitioner had also demanded that the course should be taught in the regional language Tamil.

The Background

The student, S. Sasikumar approached the high court to quash the disciplinary action against him by college authorities. He had entered into a quarrel with the college authorities after he barged into the room of the Principal demanding installation of Dr Ambedkar's portrait in the principal's room.

The judge advised the student to provide a handwritten apology letter to the principal. He also directed the government counsel to ensure that the portrait of Ambedkar is put up in the principal’s office. After it was informed to the court that the portrait was installed, the student also expressed his apology, and the judge directed the college principal not to take further action against him.
