According to the announcement, the fee to be waived is for the Maharashtra board exams 2022 to be conducted in the upcoming year.

COVID-19 Crisis: The government of Maharashtra on December 2, 2021, announced its decision to waive off the exam fee of Mah SSC 10th and Mah HSC12th state board students, who have lost their parents due to the novel coronavirus infection. According to the announcement, the fee to be waived is for the Maharashtra board exams 2022 to be conducted in the upcoming year.

Announcing the decision, state School Education Minister Varsha Gaikwad said, "A small solace from our side to the children who lost their parents to the pandemic - exam fee for state board exams 2021-22 is being waived off." "We are aware that they have gone through a lot already, but their education must continue," she said.

A recent survey by policy think tanks LIRNEasia and ICRIER stated that amid the ongoing pandemic situation, Maharashtra managed to ensure continuity of formal education for 38% of its school-going (enrolled) children. The state has also been ranked highest on continuity in education during COVID-19 school closures.

Meanwhile, the reopening of schools in the states has also begun. The government allowed the reopening of schools for Classes 1 to 4 in rural areas and 1 to 7 in urban areas in the state from December 1, education minister Varsha Gaikwad announced on social media.

However, due to the rising Omicron variant of COVID-19, Mumbai has posted its schedule to reopen schools. Now, schools for Classes 1 to 7 in Mumbai will reopen on December 15, instead of December 1. Meanwhile, schools in Pune will also remain closed until December 15.
