IIMCAT recorded 9-year high in CAT registrations this year with 2.44 lakh candidates applying for the MBA entrance exam. The number of registrations is the highest since 2010.
CAT 2019 registration process began on August 7 and ended on September 25, during which 2,44,169 applicants registered on the official website of CAT. Last year, the number of applicants was 2,40,338.
This is the highest number of applications, since 2010. In that year, 2.04 lakh candidates registered for CAT exam. Until 2012, CAT registrations remained over 2 lakh but there was a dip in number of registrations in 2013 and 2014. In 2013, 1.95 lakh candidates registered for the exam and in 2014, 1.97 lakh candidates registered. From 2015 onwards, CAT has seen a rise in number of registrations every year.
The sharpest rise in CAT registration was in 2016 when the number of applicants jumped from 2.19 lakh in 2015 to 2.32 lakh. Since, then the national level MBA entrance exam has seen steady rise in the number of applicants.
CAT Registration Trend Since 2010
Experts attribute this rise in number of applicants to slowing down of economy. Many in the industry feel that with weak economy, professionals may want pursue MBA now to so that they are better equipped than peers.
CAT exam is conducted for admission to India’s premier B-schools, the IIMs and other top MBA institutes. Over 1200 MBA institutes accept CAT score for admission to its various MBA/PGDM and Executive MBA programmes.
CAT 2019 will held on November 24 in two slots. The exam will be conducted in online mode at various exam centres in 156 cities across India.
