The loss is especially tragic as Patel had recently secured a job at a fashion e-commerce firm and was scheduled to begin his career on Monday, January 6, 2025.
The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore is in mourning after the sudden death of Nilay Kailashbhai Patel, a second-year student of the post-graduate programme (PGP) in management. Patel was found dead on the hostel premises early Sunday morning. The institute confirmed the news on its official social media account, expressing profound sadness at the loss of a valued member of the IIMB community.
Unfortunate Incident on IIM Bangalore Campus
According to reports from various sources, Patel had been celebrating his birthday with friends on campus on Saturday night. When returning to his room early the next morning, he was found unconscious on the hostel lawn around 6:30 AM by security guards. A medical team was called to the scene and attempted to revive him using cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). However, he did not respond to their efforts, and he was rushed to a hospital on Bannerghatta Road, where he was declared dead on arrival.
The loss is especially tragic as Patel had recently secured a job at a fashion e-commerce firm and was scheduled to begin his career on Monday, January 6, 2025. The sudden loss of such a promising individual has left both his peers and the IIM Bangalore community in shock and sorrow.
Police Suspect Accident; No Suicide Note Found
According to the Mico Layout Police, the incident is believed to have occurred as Patel may have lost his balance while returning to his room. The police speculated that he accidentally fell from the second floor of the hostel building. There was no suicide note found, and no indications of any issues that may have led Patel to take his own life, according to authorities. A case of unnatural death has been registered based on a complaint filed by Patel's parents, who reside in Gujarat. The police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding his tragic death.
AIOBCSA Demands Clarification
Following the incident, the All-India OBC Students Association (AIOBCSA) raised concerns regarding the institution's support systems. The association posted on X (formerly Twitter), urging IIM Bangalore to provide clarification on the matter. "We demand @iimb_official to provide clarity on this critical issue. The institution lacks adequate mechanisms to address the concerns of marginalized communities, a matter we have repeatedly highlighted," the AIOBCSA stated. They also called upon the Ministry of Education to take immediate action to prevent further student suicides and improve the support systems for students, particularly those from marginalized backgrounds.
IIM Bangalore's Response and Support for Students
Q: Does IIM Bangalore accepts CAT score for Executive MBA admission?
No, IIM Bangalore accepts GMAT/ GRE to provide admission to the EPGP course. Candidates qualifying for any of the two entrance exams can apply for the E-PGP course provided they fulfil the other eligibility criteria as well. The minimum eligibility requirements are as follows:
- Graduation in any discipline with a minimum of 50% aggregate or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA)
- Applicants from SC, ST and PwD categories must have a minimum of 45% or equivalent CGPA
- Applicants who have not pursued any bachelor's degree but completed their CA/ ICWA/ CS after Class 12 are also eligible to apply
Q: Can an average student get into an IIM?
The answer to this question of whether an average student can get into IIM can be both yes and no depending on the definition of an average student.
- Based on Academics (Class 10/ Class 12/ Graduation): While a student with average scores in Class 10, Class 12 and graduation with a good CAT score certainly has good chances of getting a call from IIM-A, chances are less for someone with an average CAT score.
- Based on student category (General or Reserved): While it is tough for a General category average student to grab a seat at IIM due to high score requirements, a reserved category student can get admission being at average scores as well.
- Based on past work experience, diversity and other factors: Gender and academic diversity is also a factor on which students are shortlisted at IIM. IIMs judge the past academic category based on the degree obtained by the students before MBA and then a weightage is allotted based on that. For Engineers, the percentage for scoring the highest marks is higher as compared with other streams
- Performance in selection rounds: Once you make it to the final selection rounds, i.e., AWT/PI process, it can be considered a fresh start. At this stage, students can forget their past average-ness but definitely require good grasp over the past subjects as academics-related questions are asked in the interview.
Based on the above factors, it can be considered that while getting into top Management institutes, such as IIM is extremely tough, the past performance, CAT performance, student category and a lot of factors can be the reasons for a student to receive that final call.
Q: Can I join IIM Bangalore after Class 12?
It is not possible to join IIM Bangalore directly after Class 12 since the institute mostly offers postgraduate and doctoral level programmes in the field of Management. However, a student who has completed his/ her Class 12 can complete the final graduation and then look out for admission to IIM-B.
The institute offers MBA, Executive MBA, and other courses at PG, doctoral and certificate level courses in the field of Management. Interested applicants are required to go through the national-level entrances and then appear for the institute-level selection rounds for final admission. Admission to the flagship course, i.e. MBA of IIM Bangalore is based on a valid score in the CAT exam, followed by a Personal Interview (PI) and Written Ability Test (WAT) round. IIM Bangalore offers admission to Indian students via CAT and international students via GMAT/ GRE. IIM Bangalore conducts IIM-B tests for admission to Executive MBA (EPGP) and PhD courses.
In response to the tragic event, IIM Bangalore expressed its heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Nilay Patel. The institute also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the well-being and support of all students, emphasizing that they are reviewing internal mechanisms and providing assistance to those affected by the loss.
The death of Nilay Patel has left the IIM Bangalore community deeply saddened, as they remember the young student’s bright future and potential. As investigations continue, the entire community is coming together to support his family and friends during this difficult time.
