IIM Calcutta's new hostel building is expected to be completed in next two years. The whole project will cost nearly INR 246 crore

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta is planning to build a 10-storey new hostel consisting 200 rooms along with new academic blocks. The hostel is designed by the architect Hafeez Contractor. The expected date for completion of this new hostel building is two years, costing nearly INR 246 crore. Union education minister Dharmendra Pradhan virtually laid foundation stone for the hostel on January 31. A Bhumi Puja Ceremony was also held at the hostel building.

An official statement released by the institute reads, “Proposed Hostel Building, Service Building & Substation Building will be a G+9 storied building, having built-up area of 32556 square metre consisting of 726 rooms with common washrooms, 200 rooms with attached washrooms with all modern amenities to secure GRIHA 5 Star rating at a proposed cost of INR 245.88 crore.”

“Since the advent of the IIM Act 2017, the Institute has revised its “Vision” and “Mission”. Although IIM Calcutta is the first IIM with triple accreditation (AACSB, AMBA and EQUIS), among the corner stones of the new Vision are for the Institute to be an international center of excellence with high global ranking in all aspects of management education, research and practice. Hence, there is now a need for us to collaborate with national and international institutions to develop global networks. We aim to attract a significant number of international scholars to our campus,” IIM Calcutta added.

The institute feels that there is an urgent need to upgrade the infrastructure, so that IIM Calcutta can retain its position on the national as well as global level. Hence, infrastructure norms such as carbon zero, ability to efficiently support and use digital technologies etc. are now essential requirements, it said.

“In view of the above, the Institute now needs to urgently build new/additional hostel and academic blocks to fulfill its Vision and Mission, while simultaneously replacing the old hostels,” IIM Calcutta said.
