IIM Indoreâs Centre of Excellence on Waste Management and WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), ANVESHAN, organized an international conference titled âTowards Garbage-Free Cities: Innovations in Waste Management and Sustainabilityâ. In partnership with the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Government of India, the event brought together esteemed experts, academics, and thought leaders from around the world to foster dialogue on sustainable waste management practices.
Emphasizing the 4Rs of Waste Management
In his inaugural address, Professor Himanshu Rai, Director of IIM Indore, highlighted the need to expand the traditional "3Rs" of waste managementâReduce, Reuse, and Recycleâto include a crucial fourth element: Refuse. He emphasized that addressing the root causes of waste generation by refusing unnecessary products is essential for minimizing waste at its source. Professor Rai also showcased IIM Indoreâs initiatives, such as promoting a zero-waste campus and implementing waste segregation, as examples for others to emulate.
ANVESHANâs Role in Driving Change
Professor Rai further elaborated on ANVESHANâs mission to support collaborations, mentorship, and training for startups and stakeholders in the waste management sector. He stated, âOur goal with ANVESHAN is to build a robust ecosystem that drives impactful research and develops solutions that are both contextually relevant and globally applicable.â The conference served as a platform for connecting academia, industry, and civic bodies to pioneer sustainability initiatives.

The conference featured keynote addresses from leading experts, including Professor Uttiyo Raychaudhuri from the University of Denver, who spoke on âRegenerative Futures.â He urged attendees to rethink their approach to sustainability and waste management, advocating for conservation and a balanced lifestyle.
Professor Andrea Sianesi from Politecnico di Milano discussed the integration of sustainability in the luxury sector, emphasizing the need for businesses to adopt circular and environmentally sustainable models. He highlighted that education is essential for driving meaningful change across industries.
Professor Belgin Okay-Somerville from the University of Glasgow explored the role of human-centered strategies in achieving sustainable urban ecosystems, underscoring the importance of well-being and positive work environments in fostering innovation.
